The Self Help Group (SHG) has been described as a unique approach to financial intermediation. It is a very effective way of extending financial services to the poor and at the same time it is a community platform through which its members can access wider development initiatives and address social issues. Organizations promoting SHGs need information to track the health of the SHGs they are nurturing. This includes information on how much money is to be collected on a given day from each member as Savings, Principal and interest (on internal loan), fine/penalty; how much of this internal loan comes from organization promoting the SHG and how much comes as a part of bank linkage; what is quality of the loan portfolio of the SHG and that of the promoting organization; how much interest is being lost by the SHG owing to default of payment of its members.SafalFIN 2.0 is essentially a solution that tracks internal lending and savings of an SHG while it maintains books of accounts promoting organization/SHG Federation-wise and SHG-wise.

Microfinance institutions operating on the individual lending model, where SHGs are treated as an individual entity, are conscious about the need to have demand information, portfolio information and staff wise performance. SafalFIN 3.0 addresses this information triad.SafalFIN 3.0 is an application designed to track loans given to Individuals and SHGs. It has a two tiered architecture with the branch version at level 1 and at level 2 we have the consolidated loan information from all the branches. Level 2 enables changes in the policy done at head office to be recorded and downloaded by the branch. SafalFIN 3.0 also comes with an impact assessment feature to track changes in the economic status of the borrowers.

The Microfinance organizations working on the model of Joint Liability Group (JLG) also have information requirements much similar to that of organizations working on the individual lending model.
